Abercrombie & Fitch Only Wants Thin and Beautiful People?

I feel that Michael Jeffries' view on who should wear Abercrombie and Fitch's clothing is ridiculous and disgusting. Nobody should tell me what I can or cannot dress in and it isn't up to him to say that I'm not worthy enough to wear his clothes. He made clothes for a reason, and the purpose is to sell them and make money. That means, anyone, fat or skinny, ugly or beautiful can buy them and wear them. Its not up to him to set the trend of popularity on his clothes based on skinny and beautiful people. And it's definitely not up to him to include who's cool and who's uncool for his clothes. Clothes shouldn't be biased on a certain type of people but made available to everyone who sees a desire to wear his clothes. It's not the clothes that make someone beautiful, but who they are inside.

 

It is fair for Jeffries to target a particular group of teens because it's his business and he has the right to choose which types of people to target on wearing his clothes. This is his "target market" and every business has a specific group of people used to target. However, although he can target whoever he wants, he does not have the right to say that comment on how he is exclusive to uncool and imperfect teenagers. Because of the fact that he's set measures and standards for who can wear his clothes, it makes society's uncool people feel even worse about their "imperfect" image. He's got the right to his opinion but not the right to say that negative comment.

This comment and exclusivity on which types of teens can wear his clothes or not contributes further to the already biased perception of what beauty is. Society's view on who's beautiful is basically skinny with a pretty face. His comment:

“In every school there are the cool and popular kids, and then there are the not-so-cool kids. Candidly, we go after the cool kids. We go after the attractive all-American kid with a great attitude and a lot of friends. A lot of people don’t belong in our clothes, and they can’t belong. Are we exclusionary? Absolutely.” 

OKAY. Well, there goes any chance at fitting in and being beautiful. His comment encourages many teenagers in the world who already believe they are not beautiful and don't fit the perfect image of a a fit body feel even more uncool and less beautiful. This makes teenagers even more insecure and wanting to starve themselves more. They are already considered unworthy, ugly and uncool in society, so what makes him have the right to hurt these people even more? Shouldn't a clothing store be promoting good values, and not negative ones? Beauty isn't about what's on the outside, because fair enough, beautiful people don't always have the perfect personality. Honestly, look at high school shows, the pretty girl and pretty boy always poses as the jerk and mean girl of the school. Wouldn't you rather be beautiful inside than to be beautiful outside while having a horrible personality? Beauty is about you being you, there's nobody in the world who can tell you if you're not beautiful or not. And even if his trend applies to skinny and beautiful people, it doesn't necessarily mean they are cool, if their personality isn't cool. On the other hand, if your personality is cool, your physical appearance might not fit the image of perfect beauty and perfect skinniness. Beauty isn't judged by your physical appearance but the character you are inside, or else, your outer beauty means nothing.
